Smart meters

Hi, we're new you bulb and was wondering what the procedure is with installation of smart meters. Are they available from bulb now and if so how much are they? Many thanks

  • Hi @pembo1276 we will roll them out in 2018 and they will be FREE.

I've put you on the list of people who want to be 'first in line' for their installation.
  • Please can you also put me on the list for a smart meter?
  • Can I be added to the list as well? Thank you!
  • Just switched to Bulb. Are you able to use our existing electricity smart meter and, could we register for s smart gas meter?
    Thanks.
  • @Uktikki We will not be able to read it remotely, but you will still be able to manually take readings to send to us. I have added you to the list in case you wanted to be on the trial!
  • Could I be added to list for Smart meters please ... many thanks
  • Please could you add me to the list for a smart meter trial?
    Thanks

Ive just switched to bulb and disappointed to read that you won’t be able to use my existing gas and electricity smart meter. Ive previously changed provider and they just took over the reading - first utility to white rose.
  • can you put me in the list please!
  • @Evan @rob942 and @cliveknapper , I've added you all to the smart meter trial list.

@paul_c we completely agree with you, it's really disappointing that the majority of smart meters installed in people's homes currently can only talk to the supplier that installed them.

The reason why it worked before is a pretty nice coincidence, it means that the two suppliers had partnered with the same smart meter software company and so they were compatible. This is not the case usually.
  • If that’s the case (which I question) which software company do you use?
  • Please add me to list too thank you
  • I'd love to be on the list as well! So curious where my energy goes!
  • @Paul_C, Bulb don't currently automatically read or install any smart meters so the answer is "none".

They're not making things up though.

  • @laurakinsey @Dollydimple_67 no problem, you're on the list!
  • Ok, please can you add me to the trial list.
  • @Paul_C Definitely! We will be in touch :)
  • Can I be added to the list as well? Thank you!
  • Hi Bulb. I'd love to be part of your Smart meter trial / initial roll-out.

Is it too early for you to answer to if you'll be using SMETs1, or future proofing with using SMETs2 ?
  • After exploring Bulb's community a little I've found the Trello board. A Smart meter related suggestion for the 'Ideas' list is the ability to download usage data in bulk.

The visibility of historical usage against the duration of measurement (half hourly / hourly) would be great for a data geek (like me) who loves a good spreadsheet ;) B)

This is something I've struggled to get from my previous supplier, as it seems they're not entirely sure how to get the data out of their system.

Further down the line, maybe make this data accessible via an API or to talk to Emoncms.org (unless Bulb could build some analysis and visualisation to rival Emoncms).

Hello Andrew at Bulb, appreciate you add me to the smart meter list too. Many thanks.

@Frank, as you've no doubt seen by now if you had a little hunt around, they're going to be 2nd gen (SMETS2) meters to ensure supplier interoperability and future proofing.

Not sure if you'll have seen this thread on your travels, but meters like the HollyTech ones will store 30 minute readings for up to 13 months so with the right client device (CAD), there's no reason technically why you wouldn't be able to grab this information locally yourself rather than relying on a Bulb supplied service.
The Presciense gateways might also end up being a good place to start but we'll have to wait until we hear more about Bulb's plans to ensure compatibility with something like it.
  • @Frank @terence805 I've added you on now.

I think @mowcius answer is more in depth that I would have been able to provide, we're not quite smart meter experts yet as we've not installed them yet and the team is still learning of the capabilities, but I would be confident in saying that Bulb's approach of full transparency and the "Data Wins" ethos, would lead us to try and obtain a smart meter that would allow you to download your own data either through the smart meter or through our website (or both).

No actual information to back this up unfortunately, but we know how important our members would find this feature, so I am sure we're working to be able to provide this for you all.

Do you have electric heaters? Based on your other post, you're looking for something with significant draw which should be relatively easy to identify. >400kWh in a bit over two weeks is in the region of a 3kW fan heater switched on 10 hours a day.
  • Me too please!!
  • @Braders81 @LawRam @richardwardman81 join the club, you're all on the list :)
  • Please could I also be added to the list for smart meter installation?

    Thanks!

Hi @MarkW, the lastest update was that the trial will be from April with the full rollout starting a few months later.
  • @MarkW You are now on the list. And @mowcius you're right full rollout will begin in the summer.
  • Can i be on the list too please

The Smart Meter v2's have been out for a while now, do you still not support them from an existing supplier? Disappointed to find I've switched to the one company that isn't supporting them.

    According to Ofgem:

All suppliers will be able to operate second generation meters. This is because the government has appointed a company - the Data and Communications Company (DCC) - to establish a new national infrastructure that will enable communications between smart meters and all energy suppliers.

I suspect that a big part of the trial that is going to be taking place is the back end systems and configuration so although Bulb can possibly technically read the information from the few 2nd gen meters that have now been installed right now, they likely don't have much they can do with it yet.

There are a lot of companies who are not yet supporting smart meter switching yet. Bulb are by no means the only one.
  • @rchblk - I have added you to the list too!

Quizzed a few (GreenStar, Green Energy, Spark, SSE) and Bulb are so far the only ones that refuses to support smart meter v2, other companies told me they had to as it was the regulations.

When you start supporting them what will happen, will people with a smart meter v2 need to wait for a new one and get placed on the bottom of your lists?

Also confused why your telling people your adding them to the list, the government have set out rules for who is upgraded first and it's not up to the energy company to pick and choose as they see fit. Cities and towns before rural, houses before flats, small flats before large block, Scotland before England etc...

I think you're misunderstanding me here. All companies will support 2nd gen smart meters because they have to but only a limited number have actually rolled them out yet (Bulb included) so don't yet have the infrastructure in place to support them. It will come in time.

I don't work for Bulb but from what they've said, it doesn't sound like the meter you currently have will make a difference. If you already have a SMETS2 meter then Bulb will simply be able to take it over as soon as they have the back end infrastructure in place and won't need to replace it.

The list is for the trial smart meter rollout starting in April. This is for those who are prepared to deal with the possibility of more hassle and likely a few questions about how things are going so that Bulb can fine tune the experience and decide on the smart meter model to roll out to everyone.

The full rollout (from July) will no doubt follow the government guidelines for installation.

  • @Adm I don't have much to add beyond what @mowcius wrote.

The one question he was unsure about -- whether we'll replace your S2 meter with a new S2 meter -- is one that Bulb is still working out. In most cases, we will not need to replace it.
  • Hello. I hope your smart meters are not like the ones tested by the Telegraph, heres a link to their report http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2017/03/06/smart-energy-meters-giving-readings-seven-times-high-study-finds/
  • @nearlyretired, thankfully we do have stringent testing to try and stop this happening in the UK.
The issue in this case is not smart meter specific though and would have been present in any electronic meter using the same technology. We've had electronic meters in the UK for years without these issues.
Update: Since the publication of this article BEAMA, the trade association which represents manufacturers of smart meters, has been in touch to say that none the smart meters tested in the study are part of the UK's official smart meter roll out."
  • @mowcius thank you for reading and replying

Sorry I mean't the other energy resellers I quizzed have already started rolling out the v2 smart meters (most in Dec or Nov last year), they also support the v1 smart meter from different suppliers (British Gas being one of them).
Also confused why your telling people your adding them to the list, the government have set out rules for who is upgraded first and it's not up to the energy company to pick and choose as they see fit. Sounds like most people want to be in the trial, so it's not really a trial it's a preferred rollout list with priority to those that ask (still waiting to be added to the list!).

Anyhow, turns out my smart meter is a v1, so I'm stuck with a limited choice of energy resellers that can use them or back to a big supplier like British Gas!
