Community Redesign - Any updates?

I see that the Trello card for the community redesign has been bumped into the short-term queue now (thanks @Jenny at Bulb ), just wondering if anyone can spill the beans on any of the plans for it?

  • @mowcius This is still on our to do list but at the moment not our number 1 priority. We will be sure to keep you updated when we have some beans to spill :)

In the previous discussion, @Will at Bulb was asking for suggestions and I'd love to provide some, but it's tricky to do so without knowing whether you're planning on staying with the existing forum platform or moving to something different.

We're likely to stat with Vanilla, unless there are specific features we want that we can't easily implement here. Either way, it would be great to know what your blue sky ideas, regardless of whether we can do them on this platform, or whether we'd have to change to another one.

    Challenge accepted:

Here are some off the top of my mind (in no particular order)
    • ability to quote portions of replies so that we can answer SPECIFIC comments, not whole posts (I had to edit the above to make it work, and still missed some of the code so failed and had to edit again, and I am supposed to be used to these things!!)
    • WYSIWYG input box so most members do not have to stare at simple HTML code (as I'm doing with this < li > code which is not 'intelligent' when I add a new line - EDIT: it seems intermittent - later on this did happen automatically but certainly didn't earlier)
    • better image embedding for sharing interesting visual content (drag & drop preferably)
    • better automatic preview of links (to improve quality of responses)
    • ability (& requirement) for admins to merge threads to remove duplication (not another 'economy 7' or 'smart meter' thread!!)
    • better notification system so we know when our comments have been responded to
    • better mobile community experience - not integrated into the bulb app so have to go to website and header is too invasive and narrow page makes text hard to read
    • clear separation of 'support' content and 'community' content - more activity to encourage member to member interaction by more active management of content to remove duplicate and incorrectly categorised posts
    EDIT: (a couple more)
    • add sentiment analysis tools - either a "love" or "like" button to posts to encourage feedback, or vote up/down for responses from the community
    • consider some light gamification to encourage participation - related to loyalty and sentiment analysis above, but focused on being able to identify the most active, helpful or responsive members in order to start conversations
I was keen to have a conversation with other members (not always have to ask bulb staff questions) because I assume we share a sense of identity around sustainable issues, but I have found it very hard to do that. I would love this place to be a more regular destination for inspiring ideas and mutual support

Someone else mentioned 'loyalty' (another suggestion - I can't search to link to it without leaving my draft) programmes and it would be interesting to bring that into the community, with virtual 'kudos' that members could then use to help direct bulb's own charitable giving or investments

Finally, I still think there is a role for creating local connections, and to see the local distribution of bulb memberships in one's neighbourhood or region, so we can find ways to bring a community together around a positive topic like sustainable energy, and maybe including a sense (as Kiva does) of how effective one's local recruits have been - how long have they stayed, how many others did they invite, what volume of carbon emissions have we jointly saved, ...

Just some morning thoughts - hope the reboot goes well. Still excited about the potential :)
