Help us improve our mobile app

Hi everyone!

I’m Flora, a user researcher here at Bulb.

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to work on a big project, trying to understand how Bulb’s mobile app could be better - more useful and more fun. Part of this project, I’ve been reading and analysing hundreds of reviews on the Bulb App, comments on social media, requests coming in through our customer service team.

Now, I’m turning to you, our Community to understand what you would need. So here’s your chance to have a say in what Bulb is doing. Tell us all about your dreams and wishes when it comes to Bulb’s mobile app.

I can’t promise that everything will happen right away. But the more we know about what you miss from the Bulb App and what your ideal Bulb App would look like, the better the real one will become.

So ready, steady, comment!

Hate to tell you this, but I think the app is really good, and hard to see how it can be improved.
It would be nice to see consumption details, like you can on the web page. I assume having the same data as you can see on the home display (When it’s working!) is something you’ll have later.

I’d primarily like to see usage graphs implemented, and a minor thing perhaps the notification top bar on android could be app-coloured.

The information for submitting readings could still be improved as for electricity meters, most digital meters don’t show the preceeding zeros so it could still be confusing to submit for new users. Perhaps just remove the requirement for the preceeding zeros.

Usage graphs would be really cool.

One thing which I would like, but I think may be a stretch too far, because of my short stature and very high up electricity meter. I was wondering if there is a way of reading the meter with the phone camera, as it stands now, to read my meter, I have to take a picture then input the value.

I agree with the other posts so far - Energy usage graphs would be good. I’m already using the app to submit my meter readings each month and really like the number recognition feature using my phone’s camera.

I agree with the other posts, it would be nice to see usage graphs maybe with previous year or average use also shown for comparison.

I’d like to see and iPad app as well as one for the iPhone.

An android widget for smart meter users would be really neat. To show hourly/daily/weekly usage graphs.

Could do the same for iOS as well.

Another vote for detailed usage graphs and charts, thanks.

Usage and detailed readings from smart meter!

Just had my smart meter installed and the first thing I’m missing is the detailed gas usage from my loop energy monitor which used to work from an optical reader on the old rotary gas meter.

I get the same data from electricity meter on loop still (since that’s off a meter tail reader), but gas would be great.

Bulb are in a great position to be a leader in smart meter and consumer data visualisation beyond the HID unit. Trend analysis is really where the interest and power is, more so than instantaneous read outs.

I have Tado smart heating and the Loop gas energy display in tandem really helped confirm when my timings for heating and hot water were working well.

I’m on the smart tariff so that I can charge my electric car cheaper overnight.

Loop still haven’t got budgets and goals set right because they don’t account for seasonal variation, particularly for gas heating.

An example of year on year trend analysis from loop, comparing to previous year (big increase is the intro of electric car, significant in winter months as it’s prepping in the morning on the cold, plugged in every day).

Can switch from kwh to cost, compare Elec to others in similar area/house style etc, compare day to day, week, month, year etc.

Hey all,

Thanks so much for the comments and suggestions. They are really great and give us lots to think about!

And just want to say that I hear all your wishes for graphs and visualisation - for both smart and non-smart meters. We’re working on this (read this post for more info) and figuring out how we can do this the best way possible.

If anything else pops into your mind, don’t hesitate to give us a shout here.

Thanks again,

Even if you have a smart meter I still want the option of putting my own readings in or at least a photo of my readings. I have a smart meter but you are still estimating my gas readings and Bulb estimated almost double the gas I actually used. I’d like to be able to correct that myself as trying to get in touch with Bulb is a nightmare. Thanks

After my smart meters were installed (back in February!!!) My usage continues to be estimated and there is no longer the ability to enter my own readings in the app!!!

Any updates to adding usage graphs to the iOS app?

Hi @rwsfrancis, firstly welcome to Bulb community

Our members with smart meters are able to see usage graphs on the Bulb app, but I think without smart meters, there is insufficient information to produce these graphs. This is as to produce these graphs, we need to have the members meter reading intervals set to daily or half-hourly readings.

A simple chart showing usage can not be hard to add and doesn’t require a smart meter to calculate. If I consume X in May and X+10 in June a bar chart would make it easy for me to understand the trend, whereas a 2 column table which no difference or variation is basically useless.
Thanks for replying

Hi @rwsfrancis you can see your monthly usage (in £) in this section of your online account at the link below. As far as I’m aware the current plan is to further improve the smart data available in the Bulb Account, rather than for traditional meters.
