How-to #6: How to change meter reading intervals

You probably already know that having smart meters comes with a bunch of benefits, from more accurate statements to being able to see your usage in pounds and pence on your IHD. However, what you might not know is that there’s even more to gain, when your meter readings are set to daily or half-hourly intervals.

Changing your meter reading intervals gives you more in-depth usage graphs

When we are receiving daily or half-hourly readings, you’ll have access to more in-depth usage graphs on your Bulb account and app. You can see these on the Energy Usage page of your Bulb account.

Changing your meter reading intervals helps us get readings more easily

Also, changing your meter reading intervals can also fix issues with us being able to receive smart meter readings. This is because instead of relying on the meter to send us a reading for the billing date only, half-hourly readings pull these readings from the meter throughout the month. Pulling readings is, therefore, much more reliable, in terms of providing us with readings we can use for your monthly statement.

Therefore, if you’re having an issue with your smart readings not showing on your statement, it’s always worth checking that you’re set to daily or half-hourly readings first.

Changing your meter reading intervals

At Bulb, we’re all about helping our members to self-serve and you can change your meter reading intervals from within your Bulb account yourself. To do this, go to your Bulb account and click the ‘Account settings’ button.

Scroll down to ‘Smart meter settings’, which looks a bit like this:

When you click ‘Change settings’, it will take you to a page that lets you change the settings.

As the page says, we recommend setting this to ‘Every half hour’. This gives us the most regular meter readings to our system, which allow us to create more detailed usage charts in your Bulb account and on our app.

If you have a smart meter and you’re not able to see the ‘Smart meter settings’ option, it may be because you have a first generation (SMETS1) smart meter that we can’t read remotely at the moment. However, if this isn’t the case, do get in touch with us and we can look into this for you.

It’s worth noting that these half-hourly readings won’t all load into your Bulb account, so don’t worry if you can’t see them, it doesn’t mean that we’re not getting them through. As with daily readings, the only readings that will show up on the Energy Usage page of your Bulb account will be in the few days leading up to your billing date.

When you change your meter reading intervals on your Bulb account, this can take a few days to process, so don’t worry if your usage graphs don’t show up right away.

I wouldn’t know about these benefits, as my smart meters and IHD are anything but smart…

Out of interest, since you recommend half-hourly reads, and as it’s apparently the most reliable option, why is that not the default setting?

Hi @Phytone3d, I can see you have a smart meter commissioning slot booked in so hopefully we can try to get this issue resolved.

@stevefoster its to do with data protection and GDPR regulation, we need to have consent to take readings more often than monthly. We do have this clearly marked as the recommended setting when people go into this page so hopefully they will be able to make this their preference.

@GeorgieS_at_Bulb well rather unsurprisingly the commissioning slot has passed, with no interaction with Bulb and nothing visibly changed…

Disappointed yes, a rather illuminated bulb customer…
