Why has my direct debit gone from £222 to £605 this month without any prior notice?

Purely an observation even £222 seems an higher direct debit amount.

If you check out your statements are you not able to ascertain whether your account is in debit or credit, Also are your statements based on regular monthly meter readings to enable accurate charges for energy used?
