Smart meter for gas meter in the ground

When I tried to book an appointment for installation of a smart meter I got the message that it is not currently possible to fit a smart meter to a gas installation that is in a brown box on the ground. My questions are:-

  1. When will this be possible? and 2. Can I in the meantime get just the electricity on a smart meter?
